With the current escalating food prices and the economy at an individual level becoming harder, how much money you make in a month is now an issue. In this segment we have always advocated for more than one source of income to cushion yourself against times like this. When in an interview, a question about salary may pop up and the way you negotiate around it is very important. With life becoming very hard in the capital and around other towns, you need to look at the cost of living and negotiate around that.
How much you earn will determine your status and your way of life: Where you stay, where you shop, which car you drive, what you eat et cetera. If you look at our earlier article on negotiating salary we outlined methods you can use to negotiate salaries but just as a reminder of important facts you should use to negotiate your salary:
1. The first important thing you need to know is to negotiate in terms of net amounts. There is something in tax called gross up which you should leave to the employer.
2. Look at the economy around the town your employer is and then take account of what can make you comfortable.
3. Have some pride and show that you are value for the salary you are asking for.
4. Use industry standards.
5. Do your early research and have insider information on positions then evaluate yourself at which grade you fall and how much a similar grade is paid.
6. If you can’t do all this, then give the interviewer a range of your expectations.
With the hope that this will help, we wish you good economic decisions.
