Times are tough…Get tougher.

There is this common saying in English, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ Ever heard of it? This is a very applicable statement in your career. There are situations in your career that will help you see this:
1.   You may be jobless and are looking for a job. You will realize that it has become harder to find a job.
2.   You may be having a job but you want other things like more pay, better conditions of work but you realize it is hard to get those things in your current job.
3.   You may be in a well paying job but you are still hunting for your dream career with or without the good pay.

There are situations that put us in very hard conditions until we see life as unfair. Let me tell you a very short story that happened in 2007. A friend of mine was working with a big audit firm where he joined straight from campus. After a year with the company he realized that he has never enjoyed that job and he joined the company just for a flimsy reason of getting money. All his life he has wanted to work in the radio and production business but because these jobs are rare to come by, he chose to do something irrelevant to his ambitions just to put food on the table.

One day, he decided enough was enough and started job hunting but times were hard. He chose to go another way and started a small business and after a year, he solved a few financial problems and jointly started a radio station as a partnership. He took over the management of the company and now he is in his dream office. Had he thought of staying he may have been very unhappy in life forever.

Times can be tough but you also get tougher. Anything you want today may not come today but if you persist you will achieve your ambition. There is this common fear around our country that if you are not employed, you will never have money or be rich. Let me tell you a fact, if you are employed for most of your life, you will likely not be wealthy, you will have seasonal money and that is it. Unless you use the money you earn wisely and start your own thing like a business and wise investments, never shall thou be rich. If you just sit there working and at the end of your service you get the pension and wait to die, tell me how is that life. That is a topic for another day anyway.

In this times, the HR trends show that there are applicants with more qualifications than you asked for in any specific job. Just the other day, a job was advertised of an accountant in one of the companies that advertise here where I happen to know the HR officer. We were having a chat in a hotel and she told me that even guys who had MBAs were applying for a job that required a diploma and CPA or ACCA. This just shows you that the competition for the small pie available is very tight.

To beat competition and remain relevant in the job market we advise that you do the following:

1.   Improve your skills in job hunting.
2.   Enhance your papers e.g if you have money go for MBA.
3.   Spice your CV with professional papaers.
4.   Attend conferences and symposia that are relevant to your dream job. Indicate them in your CV.
5.   Always read the HR market trends to know where the shift is towards.
6.   Make sure you remain relevant. Look at jobs that are even higher in your grade and monitor the requirements.
7.   Live happy with the small that you have and love yourself.

Please get tougher lest you get outshined by the competitors.

We at HCC wish you all the best.
