Monday, July 13, 2026- More than 2,700 people are estimated to have died during recent heat waves in England and Wales, according to a new analysis by researchers from Imperial College London, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the Met Office.
The deaths were linked to extreme heat events in May and June, with experts warning that rising temperatures are creating a growing public health challenge.
Researchers estimated that around 550 deaths were associated with the May heat wave, while approximately 2,200 occurred during the June heat wave.
The analysis found that many fatalities were connected to heat worsening existing health conditions, including heart and respiratory problems, with older people and vulnerable groups facing the greatest risks.
The findings have increased pressure on authorities to strengthen heat preparedness, improve public warnings, and protect communities as extreme temperatures become more frequent.
Health officials say adapting homes, healthcare systems, and emergency responses will be critical as the impact of climate-related heat events continues to grow.
