Wednesday, August 25, 2026 - At least 30 people have been killed after a massive landslide struck the Dar Es Salam landfill in Conakry, Guinea, following heavy overnight rain.
The collapse sent a huge mound of waste onto nearby shacks and homes in the Gbessia area, while rescue teams rushed to search through the debris for survivors. Officials said six people were seriously injured and several homes were destroyed.
The disaster has raised urgent concerns over safety around the city’s largest open-air waste dump.
Authorities had planned to close the landfill on the same day of the collapse and had issued eviction notices to residents living nearby, but many people remained in the area. Rescue workers are using excavators and other equipment to clear the site as the government begins efforts to relocate families still at risk.
The tragedy highlights the immediate dangers facing communities living close to unsafe waste sites, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
With rescue operations continuing, authorities face pressure to accelerate relocation, improve waste management and prevent another collapse. The government’s response in the coming days will be critical to protecting vulnerable residents as the rainy season continues.
