Wednesday, August 25, 2026 - A fast-moving wildfire has forced about 42,000 people to evacuate as flames spread toward neighborhoods in Reno, Nevada.
The Hawk Fire grew to more than 15,000 acres, driven by strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation, while another 45,000 residents were placed under evacuation warnings. Authorities have described the fire as human-caused and said its exact circumstances remain under investigation.
The blaze has already destroyed homes and injured at least six people, including firefighters and civilians. Its rapid and unpredictable movement has complicated firefighting efforts, with officials warning residents not to delay if they are ordered to leave.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized additional resources, including National Guard support and aerial firefighting equipment.
The emergency remains a major threat to communities around Reno as firefighters work to prevent further spread. By Monday, crews had begun making progress, reaching about 27% containment, but more than 60,000 people were still under evacuation orders or warnings.
Authorities continue to urge residents to follow evacuation instructions, avoid affected areas and stay alert as dry conditions keep the wildfire risk high.
