Wednesday, August 25, 2026 - Torrential rain has forced offices and schools to close across parts of southern Taiwan as a persistent low-pressure system triggers widespread flooding.
Authorities in Kaohsiung and Tainan, home to more than four million people, as well as Pingtung, Chiayi, Taitung and Hualien, announced closures as conditions deteriorated.
The scale of the rainfall has raised serious concerns. Kaohsiung authorities said accumulated rainfall over five days could exceed 1.3 metres, almost half the city's typical annual rainfall.
Rail services have also been disrupted, with some express trains cancelled and other services dependent on weather conditions.
The danger could intensify as Taiwan prepares for another weather threat later this week. Typhoon Saudel is expected to pass north of Taiwan on Friday, bringing additional rain before moving toward eastern China.
With flooding already affecting communities and transport, authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as the severe weather develops.
