Wednesday, August 25, 2026 - Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has held an urgent meeting with senior security officials after a wave of coordinated attacks struck the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.
Authorities reported 51 incidents on Saturday night involving small bombs, arson and property damage, with a 7-Eleven store in Pattani among the prominent targets. Three civilians were reported injured.
The violence also disrupted transportation after a bomb damaged railway tracks in Narathiwat, forcing the suspension of local and long-distance train services.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, although authorities and analysts widely suspect the attacks are linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the main separatist movement operating in Thailand’s Muslim-majority southern provinces.
The attacks come as Bangkok is trying to revive efforts to resolve the southern insurgency through political dialogue.
With violence threatening to undermine those efforts, the government faces immediate pressure to strengthen security while keeping negotiations open and addressing long-running grievances in the region.
