Wednesday, April 16, 2025 - A source familiar with recent events in Rhamu, Mandera North, has accused local enforcement officers of releasing a suspect alleged to have committed murder, under circumstances the source believes point to abuse of office and possible bribery.

The source claims the suspect, identified as an Ethiopian national, presented himself at a police station with the weapon he allegedly used in the incident, and that the family of the deceased also filed a report, whose Occurrence Book (OB) number has been documented.

Although the family was reportedly informed that the suspect would be taken to court, the source says they later discovered that he had been released and left the country.

Police officers are alleged to have told the family that the man escaped from custody and nothing could be done.

"Hi Cyprian.

Hide ID. I am writing about a deeply worrying incident that needs immediate action and attention. Enforcement officers based in Mandera North (Rhamu), whose duty is to protect and uphold the law, have undermined justice by releasing a murderer.

The murderer, who is believed to be a citizen of Ethiopia (red T-shirt), took himself to the police station holding the same weapon he used to commit the crime. He told the officers he does not regret his actions. The family also went to the same police station and reported the incident (O.B numbers in the picture).

They were told the murderer would be arraigned in court and were assured the man was behind bars. Only to realise the murderer was released and flew to his home country. When police officers are asked about the incident, they say the young man escaped and there is nothing they can do to help the deceased’s family. Action by these police has denied justice to the victim and their loved ones.

We cannot allow abuse of power by the same people who are meant to protect it. Kindly help me by tagging all the authorities concerned for a transparent investigation and the circumstances that led to his release. The officers have violated the law and assured the community that justice must be an option in this country and one has to choose which one to get. It is also believed they received a bribe and acted with intent. This is the identification of the victim."
